review 1: Compared to the writer's books like "The forget-me-not sonata" and "Meet me under the umbu tree", I found this story rather superficial and the plot quite thin. The story has been amply described in other reviews, so I will not elaborate on that. It tells about Angelica, a writer of child'ren's books, her husband, who is too busy being a banker than paying his wife and 2 child'ren the attention they deserve, and her 4 excentric friends. They are all married to wealthy men and their shopping events and social events are too much present in my opinion. The continuous boasting of the 5 friends about designer clothes, from Prada, Gucci clothes, diamonds, expensive child'ren's toys, parties on exotic islands,... are boring in the end. The writing style is very nice and... more the book is well written and poetically describes the beautiful South African landscape, at the same time focuses on the high criminality in the country. On the other hand, the story provides insight into what life is really about and the quotes at the beginning of each chapter are quite inspirational.
review 2: Read the blurb and expected a sort-of Kensington based version of 'Sex & The City', which I found hugely entertaining - watching/reading about spoilt, materialistic, selfish women who lunch can be fun.But the protagonist in 'The Affair' takes the biscuit. She supposedly falls in love with an attractive guy because he appreciates her. Revels in her own drama. But when she finds out he has cancer she speeds away faster than a jack-rabbit. This sort of narcissism isn't amusing but quite offensive. There is a peculiar disconnect between what the author wants us to believe: that her character has become a wiser person from this experience, and what she actually puts down on the page - a still materialistic, spoilt, self-centred and self-deceiving creature. Found this thoroughly irritating. less
