review 1: This was a Goodreads giveaway that I won recently and it was fantastic. It started with an unidentified dead girl who was not reported as missing. She had a scar, a burn on her face. She was abused and neglected. Louise was the investigator and she was making connections to other missing girls in the woods. The dead woman is a girl names Lisemette who had been in a home for mentally disabled children. Louise speaks with a care assistant named Agnete from the home who tells her that these kids are "just left there and forgotten". Anyway, Louise finds what she is looking for. It turns out the girl Lismette has a twin named Mitte who both have death certificates signed from 1980 AND it is a twin sister. The name Lismette is really one name for the twins, Lise & Mette... more. Both girls were severely mentally disabled and cannot be without one another - what a story that is!!! Holy cow! Dad is notified in 1980 and the twins belongings returned to him. "That's the way things were done back then" he said. Sad story. I cannot imagine to be told to "forget about them and move on with your life" as they told him. Unfathamable. Now... where is the missing twin since the older is dead - again? That is the whole pull of this book - where is Mette and is she alright? Now, I forgot to mention Eik who is Louise's partner. Nice, very nice. I like this guy and he is not really her partner, she is kind of his boss but they make good partners. I love their relationship. Just a side thought.About 1/3 of the way through the book there are more characters and they are all coming together to a nice big head. The author leads us along trying to figure out who the monster is and to be honest with you... there are so many! I feel bad for those locked away back in the day! The story is intense. You also learn about Louise's boyfriend Klaus who hung himself and is the major demon lingering in Louise's life. You don't hear much but enough to want to learn more. To be honest with you, the people being investigated are insanely interesting and the "way things were done" at the Institution was engrossing. Sufficiently disturbing to keep me riveted. The author gets deep and I "felt" the emotions she portrayed. There was a scene at the end describing an older couple walking hand in hand, and she stated that life for them "wasn't always that uncomplicated". You'd have to read the book to see what an understatement it was.I also enjoyed reading about Camilla and Frederic that they got a nice spontaneous wedding - that was nice. Also, Jonas, the talented musician with the presence on YouTube was another character I would have liked to hear more about. Mostly though it was Eik and Louise that I hope stay together. I was kind of smitten with him. I don't think he is going anywhere so maybe I will hear more of him in the future. As you can tell I enjoyed the story immensely and was pleased with how it ended, so thanks for the Good Read!
review 2: Though there was a lengthy exposition, even excruciatingly so at times, the entirety of the book held together rather well. The major action only started rolling about 2/3rds of the way through the book. Before that, you essentially only know what the book summary gives you. There were no major plot holes, which is something that usually bothers me a lot. I enjoyed the characterization and back stories, though, again, most of it only came 2/3rds of the way through the book. Finally knowing what was causing Louise's unease in her hometown was almost as big as the big reveal at the end of the book. In fact, I'm already looking forward to the next book so that I can find out more about what happened there. :)Other than that, the translation was decent and the story was compelling enough to get me through. Give it a shot. less
