review 1: Kill Me Softly is a story about fairy tales that turn dark, curses that follow generations, and Mira, the girl drawn back to Beau Rivage is seek of her parents. Mira has been told that her parents died in a fire when she was young and she was taken in by her two aunts. Actually, these aunts are Mira's fairy godmothers and Mira must find a way to live despite her sleeping beauty curse. All the fairy tales are here in a delightfully wicked way. Beast and Belle are here, Sleeping Beauty and Prince Charming as well as Bluebeard are all represented in the present day. All characters must find a way to live their lives while heeding the curse they are born with. A dark but fun read, I would recommend this book to teens looking for a twist on the Disney t... moreales.
review 2: Sigh. I do so enjoy novel-length fairy tale retellings. The promise this one held fizzled pretty quickly as the story devolved into what I call the disingenuously naive/ stupid heroine syndrome. I can see teen girls going gaga over Mira and her dilemma of having not one, but three hot guys after her, but (old as dirt) I tired pretty quickly of the impotent foot stomping and wide-eyed refusal to put two and two together and get the hell out of Dodge. It would've been a pretty short story had she done that though. Cross obviously did her research as these are not the Disney version (indeed, she pokes a bit of fun there), but the creepy, predatory, sexual, violent cautionary tales that were told around the fireplace once upon a time. There was a sexual ickiness here that made the feminist in me cringe. Were it not for the fact that I read this one with my ears, in the car, I would've been pulling my newly grown back hair out and alternately hurling the book across the room. At this point, you may ask why I kept reading? I rarely dnf a book. I'm stubborn that way; however, this one was just terrifically narrated. Kim Mai Guest is a new narrator for me. Her lilting musical voice was perfectly suited for sixteen-year-old Mirabelle. She did a terrific job modulating her voice uniquely for all the other characters, male and female, young and older. While I still rolled my eyes at the bodice-ripping melodrama, her performance made me feel like I was witnessing real adolescent melodrama in all its messy glory. That said, I still fear for the mental and sexual well-being of any young reader who swoons over this. less
