review 1: This book had promise. It really did. In a world where most people are cursed to live some version of a fairytale. Modern fairy tales? Great! That sounded really interesting. The romance and just the characters in general killed it for me. As I was saying, modern fairy tales, this is modern times, so I was assuming the girls wouldn't sit there and wait for their prince to show up. This was true, besides for our heroine, Viv. Viv is one of the people thats says, i'm done with being pushed around and waiting for people to help me, i’m going to help myself. Which is great and all, if she hadn't waited til the last third of the book to do so. And the romance. It was horrible. A quote about this “‘I don’t own you.’ ‘Yes, you do, Viv. You know you do.’”(page ... more93) No, she doesn't own you. That’s illegal now. This is the “I can't be happy without you.” “You are my everything” Kind of romance. The worst part? Viv treats Henley (Her boyfriend who is cursed to be the hunstman) Horbibly. But because he loves her he won’t break up with her. I don’t care if she loves him back. If you love someone you shouldn't treat them how she treats him. The reason I gave this book two stars instead of one, is because the writing itself wasn't bad. It wasn't like I was sitting there having to re-read everything because I didn't understand, but it wasn't so amazing I was sitting there in awe of how amazing it was. It was easy to read. This is part of a series, but it can be read as a stand alone.
review 2: It's a good re-telling of Snow White. Though Viv, the book's MC could have been a stronger character, it was nice to see other stories incorporated into this one. It left a series of openings that would be delicious to explore. It had some interesting plot twists. I really don't like how Viv treats Henley but it made her a unique if unlikeable personality. I am interested in learning more about the side characters. less
