review 1: The writing was beautiful and evocative, but I found there wasn't much forward motion and it didn't end anything like how I expected. The last 20% or so felt a bit rushed, especially the last few pages. Also, the segregation of the Carhullan women and the men bothered me. It's stated that any boys born to the women are sent away to a life of malnourishment - I don't understand why the boys (and the men) couldn't stay at Carhullan too. If Megan and the other girls had been brought up with unbiased, utopian beliefs, why couldn't the boys?It was disturbing and insightful, and readers who appreciate gorgeous descriptions will enjoy it. However, when I finished, I felt a bit disappointed.
review 2: This book still haunts my dreams; when society in the U.K. fails, the
... more fallout leaves average citizens wondering what freedom means. One woman, discontent with this new world, latches on to a dream, a secret place in the hills where individuals can live outside governmental control. But when held up to the light of experience, what do dreams become? Exquisite writing (although the end, in line with the book, seems a bit hasty and choppy) and imagery permeate this book. less

Not my favorite, kind of slow, I kept waiting for it to get good, but it never really did.

it was okay if I can give it two and a half stars I would.

Not great, but a good read and surely thought-provoking.

Good enough, but the ending was sorely lacking.
