review 1: While it harkens back to The Handmaid's Tale in theme and structure, this book holds it's own in the sea of dystopic fiction. The narrator isn't an 'everywoman' nor is she 'the reluctant chosen one', but rather a woman who makes the choice to leave behind safety and complacency in defense of her ideals. What we get to see in this too-brief adventure isn't the epic revolution, but the complete transformation of both Sister and the family of women she becomes a part of, as they give up everything to face their oppressors head on.
review 2: I'm just... really conflicted on this book? Hall has a couple pretty phrases but there were also some that bothered me a lot, where I'd read what she had and think, "I would have written it much differently." I wanted to like i
... moret more than I did, but I couldn't care for a good portion of it, and I also found it slow reading, even though it's so short.I'm also not entirely sure about the gender essentialism of this novel. I'm a feminist, but... like... I don't know if it helps to be like "ALL MEN ARE TERRIBLE. ALL OF THEM." Patriarchy, yes. But that's a societal thingy. Men in general... [makes generic, vague noises of disdain for this book]If you're super into dystopias, you might dig this more than I did; if you're not, maybe skip it. less
