review 1: This novel really deserves 3.5 stars. I originally started with four stars bit changed my mind. I love the authors voice. This is a book of four seemingly random stories meld together. The stories each exist within a different time period, so the reader will be going across decades between narrators. Hall is a great writer full of wit and beautiful character portrayal. She asks grand questions on love, companionship and art. Sometimes I found the chapters to be excessive and on one case too repetitive. I will be reading more of her books.
review 2: I am not alone in thinking that although the writing was "painterly" and very beautiful this book had too many flaws for our book group to give it more than three stars. This is the average as some wanted to give it
... more 2.5 and one (she who nominated the book 3.5). Yes the writing was evocative and painted vignettes however the structure of the book, became to confusing and at times feeling contrived with the links between stories. The biggest disappointment or flaw was the ending, it left me stranded and unsatisfied. less
