American Girls: Marie-Grace and Cécile
review 1: Ok. I now feel like I have a pretty good sense of what these American Girl books are all about. They are moralistic, sentimental, and fairly flat, but they do teach History and Values and Stuff Like That in a fun and relateable way. This one is about Marie-Grace finding an abandoned baby on the doorstep of her father's clinic. The Lesson Learned is that sometimes when you love something you have to let it go, and it's not an old cliché message to the elementary-aged girls who read these books. Anyway, Isobel loves them more and more, and I love getting to cuddle up and read something new with her each night.
review 2: This newest American Girl follows her predecessors and exhibits selfless behaviors. Marie-Grace can't believe someone would leave a baby ou
... moretside of her father's office. However, she loves acting like a big sister to the young boy. She continues to visit him even when he is given to the orphanage. Due to an outbreak of the deadly fever, one of the nuns wants to take the baby with her to Chicago. Can Marie-Grace bear the little boy go?The author attempts to stay true to the time era and setting of New Orleans by using a mix of French and English. The illustrations also help to show how the characters would dress in this era. The author also gives just enough history lessons in the dialogue so that the reader will understand the complications that slavery and the yellow fever causes to the baby's future. This is a great transitional chapter book for a young girl. The text is slightly larger than a 12 point font, but there could be a few more illustrations to aid in the telling of the story. While some of the plot is contrived, such as both Marie-Grace and her father were already affected by the disease, this story will transport its young audience to the past. This book is recommended for young girls in grades 3-5. less
