review 1: This book was about a girl called Verdita. She was from in Puerto Rico but she always wanted to go to United States and be an American. She past through a lot of things. She always thought that her father and her mother don't loved her because her mom was having a baby and she was jealous of that, She began to think like a big lady. She was smart and spoke Spanish and English very well. She wanted all the attention from her mom and dad. She went to United State to visited her family who lived there. She was happy about it and she felt like an Americana.
review 2: Really great story about family, entering adolescence, gender roles, and Puerto Rican identity. I do wish the author had either made the politics a little more pervasive or had left them out altogether
... more. They were a little distracting. But maybe if I knew more about mainland-Puerto Rican relations, it would've seemed more obvious? Nice, clear writing that seems to capture that narrator's point in life perfectly. less

Pretty disappointed - from reading the jacket, I thought it was going to be so much more.

Not my cup of tea, I guess. I couldn't even force myself to read the whole book.
