review 1: This play was hard to read since so much of it relys on being an audience member, seeing the simultaneous action in the living room and "in the next room". So much of the dialogue, to me, also depends on the actor's sensibility. I'm sure Laura Benanti brought so much life to Mrs. Giving's awkwardness, nervousness and excitibility on Broadway; I just had a hard time picturing it. When I read the character, I had a hard time coming to terms with all her characteristics and neuroses while trying to understand why she is behaving the way she is at any given moment. I'm sure that's the mark of a good playwright, making us curious about the characters and want to spend more time with them to figure out how they tick. Sarah Ruhl has written a very fun play about the dawn of el... moreectricity and the dawn of newfound intimacy that same electricity (through a new invention called "the vibrator") gives to each person who enters the next room. What's actually really cool is that there's such depth to this sex comedy premise, soooo much to pool through and explore. I'm sure I'll be thinking about each character in this play for a while and what excitibility Sarah Ruhl has generated with her work.
review 2: Holy smokes how I love this play! It is my favourite play for now. Just the subject matter interests me so much! "The Vibrator Play". Not to mention it is excellently written, the characters are distinct, and well-developed. Some parts make in the play me laugh out loud, some also express exactly how I feel. And the thing Sarah Ruhl did - two parts of the stage being two rooms and things happen simultaneously on both sides? That is just brilliant. I've never seen anything like that in a play before, it has done in books, but it's much trickier with stage play. I wish I could see this play in theatre so I could get a better sense of how it actually plays out. Imagine how challenging (and fun) that would be for the actors and everything! I also adore the cover picture! Love this play! less

Very interesting play. Also, very strange, and a bit excessively artsy at times...

A hysterical account of the problems with Victorian sexual suppression.

Just so-so. A bit disappointing; expectations were higher.
