review 1: Honest, insightful and precise. At times, terribly wrong, but always lovingly so. Ruhl's heart is always in the right place, right on her sleeve, bleeding magic and wisdom and wonder. If you're a fan of theater or a fan of poetry or a fan of literature or a fan of illusion, this is the perfect book for you.I've studied theater for more than 20 years and this is the first book I've read since high school that challenged my notions of what the theater should be and what magical bits make up an individual. I cannot recommend this book enough. We, as a theatrical community, are better for having Sarah Ruhl.
review 2: This collection of 100 essays (see the title) is inconsistent but good. An odd but workable combination of memoir and commentary on the modern theatre
... moreand creative writing, the essays range from a few sentences to several pages. I found the second half of the book stronger than the first, partially because that’s when Ms. Ruhl delves into her thoughts and experiences with American theatre at the dawn of the twenty-first century. For theatre geeks and bookworms – especially those looking for a book that’s somewhat easy to put down and pick up at leisure – it’s worth a read. Recommended. less
