review 1: Steeped in Upper Midwestern culture, language (or the economy thereof), landscape, and spirit, this novel is, on the surface, more of a collection of short stories, all connected by the thread of Naledi - the lodge that's also called "Vacationland." The downside of a collection of short stories? Just when I was ready to dig deeper, to know more about a character or a place, the chapter was over and I was forced to move on.

It took me two attempts to really embrace the book, but one of the things I loved about it was that Stonich doesn't use a linear plot to keep the reader engaged.
