review 1: Steeped in Upper Midwestern culture, language (or the economy thereof), landscape, and spirit, this novel is, on the surface, more of a collection of short stories, all connected by the thread of Naledi - the lodge that's also called "Vacationland." The downside of a collection of short stories? Just when I was ready to dig deeper, to know more about a character or a place, the chapter was over and I was forced to move on.
review 2: LOVED Vacationland by Sarah Stonich. A great summer read, full of interesting characters that captures the essence of "up north." It took me two attempts to really embrace the book, but one of the things I loved about it was that Stonich doesn't use a linear plot to keep the reader engaged. Instead she connects each story and charac... moreters through their relationships to Naledi and each other. It can take a few chapters before you are hooked - stick with it. Very good read! less
