review 1: Great book! I borrowed from my local library and read as an ebook. I would purchase it to have in my library and for the projects. The descriptions and photos of the sewing methods are very clear. I took sewing lessons as a young girl, and the foundational lessons given here are how I learned. They have served me well over the years, and this is one of the few books I have seen to lay these simple but important tips out in an understandable way. Recommended!
review 2: I recommend this book for advanced-beginner sewists who are comfortable sewing basic patterns and want to start to learn how to sew flattering clothing. This book is NOT for absolute beginners. For that, I recommend Diana Rupp's Sew Everything Workshop. This book assumes you have some ability to se
... morew but want to learn how to sew clothing from a pattern. Likewise, this book is not for advanced sewists, since the author does not cover more advanced techniques or go into abundant detail regarding the techniques she does cover. The author does a very good job of walking the reader through important skills, including the most basic alteration techniques (the alterations that are most relevant to the patterns she includes in the book). While these instructions are good enough to complete the patterns in this book as well as many other sewing projects, the author does not go too deep into them, and I agree that she should not--many of these topics (especially alteration) could fill entire books, and the author does list a few books for readers who would like to learn more. This book contains five patterns--one skirt, one blouse, and three dresses. Rather than shoving all the patterns all together in the back of the book, there is one pattern per chapter, with an effort to tie each pattern to the information in its chapter. I thought this was a very smart approach, because a beginner who works through the project in order is able to focus on one new technique at a time rather than trying to master them all at once. The only chapter I felt was out of place was chapter 2, which is about finding your personal style and determining what types of clothing flatter you. Except the author basically says that anything you choose is good and have fun, which is nice but not really helpful and doesn't lend anything to the projects included in the book. The later chapter which discusses types of fabric are far more suited to the general audience of this book and contains much more useful information to completing the projects in this book.Overall, this is an incredibly well-written and organized book with a lovely selection of projects and a sufficient amount of hand-holding for newer-sewists to complete their first pieces of fashionable, homemade clothing less

Not crazy about the patterns included, but a nice overview of fit problems and solutions, etc.
