review 1: This book is very detailed and explains exactly what Git is doing and why. It doesn't really help you define a proper structure for your git repository, it doesn't help you setup your project if you're in a team setting of equals. This makes me think it's targeted to projects that have clear topic owners or who have a true owner. In many business projects the code is collectively owned by a team and the structure would probably reflect that in some sort. The total lack of any discussion on User Interfaces that can make git easier to use or understand was also a disappointment.
review 2: I'm not sure how to review a technical book but I'll try. At least I don't have to worry about spoilers...This book is available for free in electronic format, but I realized (af
... moreter dragging my feet for a long time) that I can't read a book like this in electronic format. I need a paper copy to flip through, so I broke down, bought a paper copy, then breezed through it.The portion of the book that is of most value to a git end-user is actually pretty short. The diagrams are helpful to understanding git branches and the text is organized so that you can read straight through it. The rest of the book is more like a reference manual for setting up servers etc. that I don't find very helpful. The book was successful in that I finally have a better understanding of how git really works instead of trying to force it into an svn-like workflow, and I'm not sure how I would have reached that point without reading through some careful examples like those shown in the book. I can't say that it was one of the best technical books that I've read, though. less
