review 1: Scott is the kind of writer who makes you believe writing is easy, but when you try to write your own thoughts/stories down you realize that you will never be able to turn words into magic. He is the kind of writer that writes with a voice so loud you can feel the warmth of his breath as he makes sound effects next to your ear, the drops of spit splattering against your cheek. Scott showcases his talent by saturating his stories with emotion and leaving you wanting to wring every last tasty drop out of each story; you're going to demand more but then realize that there is nothing that could have been added to these stories because they are magnificent just as they are. Scott took me on an emotional roller coaster ride where around one turn there was side-splitting laughter... more, but then awaiting around the next bend was a punch to the heart. So go borrow this book from your (cool) friends who already own it or don't be a penny pincher and go buy it yourself.
review 2: I read this book sitting in an airport terminal surrounded by people. Afterwards I thought longer and harder about those people than I think I would otherwise. McClanahan has a gift with words and a wisdom beyond his years. Its hard to imagine some of these stories ending more perfectly. He makes me want to be a grandfather some day or at least own a porch with a chair on it. You owe it to yourself to read these stories. less

A lot of great things. It did not hurt that Sam Pink wrote the afterword.
