review 1: This is a fine novel well wrought, entertaining, precise, bittersweet, authentic. This is a writer who knows the craft of writing, who makes every word, every sentence work; nothing is superfluous. The style matches the tone of each chapter. Read this book and you will be fulfilled. It's what writing is supposed to do: tell stories. If I were teaching a creative writing class I would assign this book.
review 2: Well written crap. Critics seem to think that a book should be lauded if it had serious subject matter handled unconventionally but that doesn't make it worth reading. .. In this case it's supposed to be darkly humorous. It's just dark and tedious. For a much better read that is actually funny, try Jenny Lawsons essays "Let's Pretend This Never Happ
... moreened" - they didn't get nominated for awards like "Hill William" probably because the critics could tell what she was trying to convey. less
