review 1: Could be that I'm a total Philistine, but I didn't find this, my first toe dipped into the waters of Seams Heaney, to be particularly moving or transcendent. I'm content to believe that the Nobel committee knows something I don't.I don't know that much about poetry, but I do know that I don't like lots of poems where the poets write with self-referential navel-gazing, epitomized when referring to oneself in the third person as "the poet." Since Seamus Heaney doesn't do this here, he's OK by me. I did find his work describing the webbed arms of an elderly man to be particularly affecting.

... morearries deep, solid meaning. The poems are stunning. I was especially struck by the way in which he is able to get at important human themes, such as the passage of time, aging, death. I am not surprised that he is a Nobel laureate. I just wish that I spoke more Gaelic! less
