review 1: Not a book I would recommend to everyone. This is an uncomfortable book for Christians and anyone with religious respect or belief. But, it carries discomfort for anyone if they are paying attention. Like Watchmen and Frank Miller's Dark Knight, it creates an exaggerated world of ideas represented by stereotyped groups with one dimensional natures, and thrusts more multidimensional characters into the midst of such a society as a means of examining the ideas the book presents. It's not just a book about religion. It aims to address something deeper. The author is pointing us to elements of the human struggle to make sense of the world. The brash use of religion/agnosticism/atheism and the crass surface depictions of straw-man characterizations offend with the intent of spur... morering thought. And while the author shows his bias and even clarifies his own place in that struggle with a biographical note in the back of the book, he shows his own doubts in the story in that he doesn't actually close the door on any position. It may not seem that way, but I think the book is more about Thomas, traditionally the skeptic, here the seeker of peace, forgiveness and assurance of absolution. For those who think this is just intended to crucify Christianity or religion in general, look closer at Thomas and look at the unresolved character of Rebecah.Definitely a challenging and thought provoking book for those who can step back and realize this is not a depiction of modern society as it is, but like Watchmen and Dark Knight, draws an exaggerated portrait which emphasizes memes and beliefs and human strivings that are a part of who we are, exposing raw elements of human nature.
review 2: I thought "Punk Rock Jesus" was great! It wasn't offensive to me in the least because I'm not religious, but it did make me question whether atheists and agnostics are any different than believers. The story progressed extremely fast and hardly had any dull moments, which was both good and bad. I'd rather see Sean Murphy work on a more expanded version to this six issue story instead of a sequel to it. less

Couldn't put it down. It's so true to our media-obsessed culture.
