review 1: What a writer! This is the first of Barry's books I've read, it won't be the last. The 3rd in a trilogy, "On Cannan's Side", is a stand alone book. An 87 year old grandmother ponders the life she has lived and the events are only the beginning. This is truly a book about the incredible gift life really is, and how the difficulties blind us to that truth. Looking back to an Irish childhood; and emergency flight to America; friendships; family; and death, Lily Bere re-experiencs her life from the perspective of age. I will recommend this book to all readers. Not only is the story great, but the writiing is lyrical and profound. It helped me to consider my own life within the perimeaters of all of life, not an easy accoplishment for a book of less than 300 p... moreages.
review 2: Lilly Bere is the renamed sister of Willie Dunne, the protagonist of A Long Long Way, and this book is every bit as good as that one. Lilly look back at life at the age of 89, and a remarkable life it has been. She had been wounded multiple times by the twists and turns of history, yet somehow manages to survive it all, with both wonder and dread. Barry's spare, but beautifully evocative writing carries the story along nice, even though some might feel that the end is a little melodramatic. less
