review 1: I have to give it to Seth Grahame-Smith....it shows that he does some research into history before he weaves a tale that ends up being extremely believable. I am certain he had some good resources, including the Gnostic gospels. That said, he really boiled this story down to something that many parents can relate to -- how to protect your child. Putting us into Joseph's and Mary's thought processes while history is being played out around them gave me a different insight into their lives. This was not the Holy Family being spirited across the desert, with angels at their sides and everything calm. Rather, this was a story about a couple fleeing a murderous king intent on killing their son, accompanied with some very colorful characters. Each person's story in this novel ha... mores compelling reasons to do what they want to do, as well as surprising themselves with what they end up NEEDING to do. Read this, suspend any bias that this could be considered a slam at Christianity (because it really isn't, IMO), and let this tale take you to a place where parents need to make the right decisions. Oh, and Mary? She's quite something, not the shy, compliant teenager that some would like us to believe.
review 2: Amazing how the biblical aspect of this was taken seriously while playing as a backdrop to such a bloody side show. Author Grahame-Smith knows how to walk the fine line and does it with a moxy that leaves readers appalled while entertained and truly wanting to hear more. The tragic themes carry the most weight while I was left intrigued by the sense of dark humor littered with colorful storylines. I enjoyed Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter and was equally surprised to find "Unholy Night" to be as well written and original to its own right. less

The greatest Christmas story ever written... I wish Tarentino would turn this into a movie.
