review 1: A page turner. The first time I heard about this story, I was looking for any nice and watchable gay romances I could find out there. Somehow, I ended up watching the 1:30 min. trailer of the movie version, and stopped halfway cuz I HAD to see it asap. And I loved every minute of it. Sure, I might be a bit biased because Lisa Ray is wonderful, but still, just like that, it became one of my favorite movies, and the next day I was watching it again and again andagainandagain.. Obviously, I needed more. I needed the book. I got it, started reading as slowly as I could, but well.. :)I've seen lots of bad comments about the way it was written, I don't get it, I thought it was nicely done. But I'm no pro, and given that I enjoyed the movie so much, obviously, I loved the book too... more. The only tiny disappointment, to me, was that the last few chapters felt kind of rushed. A few more chapters could've easily been added, and maybe detailed a bit more that ending. Apart from that, I liked every single characters. They're all pretty unique. My favs are the 2 main ones of course, that are complete opposites and yet so perfect together. They're all pretty complex and the POV situation is very interesting. Also, it is a romance between a Muslim Indian girl and a Christian Palestinian girl - oh no, wait, Tala doesn't subscribe to any religion ;) - I mean, this brings so much flavor and color to the story! So much cultural background. This is the kind of thing, little detail if you will, that makes me happy. I somehow find myself very attached to this story. This is simply beautiful.
review 2: Although the genre of happy lesbian romances will always be near and dear to my heart, I thought this one just wasn't well-written. There were awkward moments in which the writing almost felt like a translation -- as though a sentence were missing. This may have been the result of cultural differences, or even a poor Kindle edition, but I found the flow of the writing to be often interrupted. I also thought the story line and character development were simplistic and clichéd.However, the depth of this book came from its exploration of culture, religion, and nationality in the context of coming out, and I thought that despite the weaknesses, it was a book worth reading, and a book that I'm glad was written. less
