Inspector Singh Investigates
review 1: Tubby, turbaned Inspector Singh stars in this gritty fourth mystery from Shamini Flint's inventive series. Singh is based in Singapore but is sent to Cambodia as an observer for the war crime tribunal of former Pol Pot henchmen. Several murders, including some of a serial nature, occur and several suspects come under scrutiny. Singh is not convinced solving the murders is as straight-forward as the local police seem to believe. Are the deaths revenge killings related to the Khmer Rouge on trial? Are the murderers foreign or Cambodian? Will Inspector Singh solve the tangled mystery using his special style of detection? I found the answer to all of these questions while also learning about Cambodian culture and history. The fact that I started reading the series in the middl... moree did not detract from my enjoyment and I do plan to read the remaining books in this series in whatever order I can find them.
review 2: In the fourth installment of the Inspector Singh series, the curmudgeonly detective is sent to Cambodia as Singapore's representative to the International War Crimes Tribunal in Phnom Penh. This assignment is even less appealing than the ones his boss normally sends him on. And Inspector Singh's inability to get a decent curry and a beer doesn't help one bit. When one of the key tribunal witnesses is murdered, Singh's trip goes from bad to worse, especially when he and his Cambodian host differ over how to investigate the case. As in the previous installments, the author brings in culture and history, making them integral to the mystery. Not knowing a great deal about Cambodia, I found the setting particularly intriguing and was glad to have an opportunity to learn how the country and its people are attempting to deal with the aftermath of the Khmer Rouge's bloody rule. The Cambodian police counterpart Singh is paired up with is a sympathetic character, as is the woman assigned to be his interpreter. Given the premise, the plot has a melancholy feel but still has moments of wry humor that were evident in the first three books in the series. I'm looking forward to joining Inspector Singh on his next two journeys -- next to India and then China -- soon! less
