review 1: I imagine that Bayes must be turning over in his grave. The good reverend was a deep philosophical thinker, and this popular exposition caricatures what and why his famous rule was created. It has been said that there are many kinds of Bayesians. The book oversimpifies the situation and various points of view in many ways. In particular, it fails to distinguish Bayes's Rule as a mathematical (and quite trivial) truism and the various applications to which the Rule has been put. It is the latter only that are at all controversial. The Rule was never "persecuted" and then much later emerged triumphant, proving all the naysayers wrong as implied by Ms. McGrayne. Portraying the Rule as somehow misunderstood or willfully ignored in its entirety by all the dunderhead statisticia... morens who are now forced to see the light is a real distortion of a complex and evolving reality.
review 2: Studying and working in computational linguistics I got interested in statistic and used Bayes rule and related methods for variety of tasks, plus I've been interested in astronomy and the code breaking efforts of WWII for quite a while. From that background this book was an excellent read. I never really knew the origins of Bayes, nor the varied history and all the roles it played in science, warfare and other ventures throughout the last couple of centuries. All in all an entertaining and informative read! less

Book doesn't really deal with the "How" Bayes rule was used over the years. Its more of a chronicle.
