review 1: Love Sharon Creech but didn't enjoy this book. It doesn't follow the typical literary flow I enjoy. I did enjoy the dialect of the Unfinished Angel. It really does relay her confusion about her purpose as an angel and her feeling that she is not quite finished. She makes up her own words (specialful) and has to piece together her thoughts while grappling for the appropriate language (when she is trying to remember the word for smile and guesses smuggles, smill, smale, and then settles on referring to them as "happy teeth." (p.16)). After each reading, I was left wondering what the message was that Creech was trying to convey to readers. It was disappointing, but I've enjoyed every other book I've read of her!
review 2: It took me a little while to get into this
... more book. I actually found this addition with the cover a little hard to follow at first. I kept thinking that the unfinished angel was the narrator, and I kept wondering where the pigeon came in (in the final chapters). The newer edition has a picture of a girl in a tower, and I think I would have caught on a lot quicker then. According to the Fountas and Pinnell leveling site, this book is a GRL U, but I could see this being pretty challenging for many fifth graders, especially second language learners. Still, I think it's a great book, and well worth adding to our classroom library. less
