review 1: I didn't expect to enjoy a children's book of short stories so much, but I really did. He's such a good story teller, and using images or ideas out of their place to highlight something that we might otherwise overlook is wonderful.Favourite quote:'It's all over!' I yelled at the top of my voice. 'Let's give ourselves up while we still have a chance!' And then, illuminated by the sweep of fierce searchlights, I saw our cargo for the first time tiny limbs struggling to hold on, small unreadable faces staring out in all directions, voiceless mouths opening and closing. Nine small turtles - all we managed to save - just those nine. They turned their heads, looking back at me with eyes like black buttons, like full stops, blinking. I could think of only one thing, and it... more erupted from my lungs like a fireball as we hurtled into the darkness: 'Keep going! Keep going! Keep going!'
review 2: Fantasy. I had trouble connecting with the stories. They are a bit wacky for my taste. I prefer continuous narrative fantasy like The Hobbit or Rick Riordan's Olympia series. These brief stories all occur in a suburban setting. No stores. Just homes and fields and lawns. The accompanying illustrations magnify a part of the story. I loved the illustrations even if I didn't much care for the stories. less
