review 1: An array of sketches and thoughts on the process of creating art. I enjoyed the introduction and short chapter intros where Tan talks about the sketch as part of the process and that "thinking" about a piece really requires setting pencil to paper. It really is unedited and real sketches, many from early versions of his published work (which I've never read but now will). It's really beautiful to get a glimpse into an artist's process and Tan draws such wonderfully adorable and funny scenes, it really is a joy. I laughed out loud at "Tai-chi", reminded me of my father.
review 2: Shaun Tan, illustrator/graphic novelist has written several graphic novels and illustrated stories for children, teens, and adults. His illustrations also appear in many other work... mores (including an animated short, “The Lost Thing”). He creates whole new worlds with his quirky imaginings – populated with mysterious (and irresistibly adorable) creatures. This notebook collects some of his drawings and his thoughts about his creative/working process. Not really a storybook, per se, but a glimpse into the imaginative space that is Tan’s mind. Fun for browsing, especially for those who are familiar with the author’s work. less
