review 1: I was enjoying this, Chad and Jack made a sweet couple, and there was a mystery going on that could of gone in any direction, but then right in the last few pages it all went down hill. The big climax turned into more of a damp squib. In fact it felt so rushed I figured the author just wanted to quickly finish this one so they could move on to a new book. I've been reading a few Shawn Lane books lately, and while they are not masterpieces they have been entertaining and the love interests have been sweet and endearing for me. Sadly as a murder mystery writer Shawn Lane fell short of the mark.2.5 pushed to a 3 because up till the last 10 pages it was good.
review 2: 4.25 StarsThe scene of a crime is hardly the place to learn that your partner is a fan of rock mu
... moresic and actually knows the inner working of the rock band The Lightening. With a dead body to worry about there was no way Lieutenant Jack Reeves, from the homicide division was going to let his over excitable partner interview Chad Storm the ex-partner of the deceased.Jack might not be familiar with either the inter workings of a rock band or its front man – but he knows his job and he has good instincts. Something about the main suspect utter look of defeat call to him and as an officer of the law he has to follow his gut feeling.Chad Storm is devastated by the loss of his friend and irrespective of the circumstances and the history that has gone on before – the loss of a life is no less easy to take. Meeting Officer Reeves does nothing for him other than bring home the fact that he is more alone than ever before. While the investigation progresses and new and incriminating information is laid on the table, Chad is facing his own demons while Jack finds himself at a cross road between his job and the man that he no longer is able to ignore. I have been waiting on TICKET TO RIDE and it was so worth the wait. Shawn Lane is an author that I have had a fantastic year with, both with the characters she introduces me to and the emotional levels that she brings to every tale.TICKET TO RIDE is no different and from the moment I met Jack and Chad it was like missing pieces finding their other half. It doesn’t come about at the drop of a hat and Ms Lane does a fantastic job of amping up the anticipatory feel to levels where I was literally pushing these two together and giving them pointersJack is ordinary if truth be told, but he is confident, has a quiet grace about him and relies a lot on his instincts. A much older guy that works in a job that is not really condusive to the lifestyle – but he has survived and he is holding his own – I liked him. Jack also has a wicked sense of humour about him that really had me grinning half the time.Chad is like the stuff that dreams are made of, too pretty for his own use, disgustingly sexy and just two sweet for words. And in spite of that he is fearless when it comes to taking a chance and going after what he wants. With the murder plot running along side the budding relationship between Jack and Chad – Ms Lane gave me a pretty decent run with these guys. The murder plot was a non factor for me with this book – it had a nice build up and the fine detail aided in moving the book along, but where this book shines is the interaction of the main protags and the anticipatory feel of the book with it’s wanting it to end, but please don’t let it end scenes. The smut was hot – I’ll label it as impulse sex – it’s the sort of smut you never expect but within five minutes all bets are off as well as Jacks trousers and the slick stuff is just within reach. The other positives of this book are how Ms Lane played the characters strengths and weaknesses against each other. They were just flawed enough to be loveable and just stubborn enough to have me rooting for them. The support casts are no less than I would expect from this author – nice and nasty intertwined and somewhere in the middle there is one that stands out and totally made the books a great read. There is one area that was a new approach for this author and I liked it – this is a short read just with a hundred pages and with novella there is always a condensed element at work. I like the fact that even with the spicy scenes Ms. Lane restrained Jack and Chad enough to allow them to have something left to work towards without me and every other reader breathing down their neck…Did I like – yes, Should you try it – definitely, did it do it for me – and then some. less
