review 1: I needed something to pass the time and this fit the bill. It appears that the author stayed fairly close to this history of the Bronte family, particularly to the almost worship of Branwell, who failed miserably but was the only son so there you go. I find it sad that the work of the 3 sisters was overlooked simply because they were "only women" but that was true for the time period. There were a few inconsistencies that bugged me. For instance, in one part of the book when Charlotte reveals herself as the author of Jane Eyre to her father, he first describes her as a "a practical girl" and then not three paragraphs later states that "she had never been practical." Huh? Anyway not bad if you like historical fiction based on the lives of real pe... moreople.
review 2: Since JANE EYRE is one of my favorite books, I couldn't resist this title and was not, in fact, disappointed. This short book tells the fictional story of Charlotte and her sisters, Ann and Emily, struggling through their dire situation of poverty and isolation to write. Finishing this book, one is struck by the marvel of their creations. We're fortunate that they were able to publish at all, given that they were women authors in an age when women didn't write books. And that women so isolated, so strangely lacking in experience -- especially in matters of the heart -- were able to write two of the world's most beloved love stories is astounding. Can't wait to re-read JANE EYRE and WUTHERING HEIGHTS for the umpteenth time, for this book has added another dimension to my understanding and appreciation of both of these favorites! less
