review 1: Oh, my. Lovely, delicate, so sweet, and raises a few very tough questions about things like informed consent. The protagonist is an adult, in an adult body with adult desires, but in many significant ways does not function as an adult and never will. He's pretty clearly an individual with high functioning autism, with no intellectual deficit, but significant developmental issues. So is he capable of consenting to a sexual relationship with Rick? He obviously wants one. Rick clearly wants one too, despite some conflicted feelings about his sexuality and a great deal of caution about pursuing the physical side.The author handles it very carefully, and I love the happy ending. I wish the part between the trip to NYC and that ending was just a little better fleshed out,... more but that's my only real quibble.
review 2: A moving novelette about first love told from the POV of a boy/young man in the autistic spectrum.I really enjoyed this story which I read after reading the fabulous review of Baba :)It's a tender love story between two young men, one of whom is in the autistic spectrum. It's very moving and tender without being too sentimental. It gives us an insight into the mind of a person with autism and how he sees the world around him and his attempts to find his place and live a full liveThe main hero's (Issac) voice is captivating and powerful with its simplicity and naivete. Issac sees the world in black and white. His sincerity about his feelings and total lack of pretense made this beautiful love story feel very real. There is no glossing over of the real-life issue both Issac and Rick face but their difficulties are not overdone either. There is a perfect balance between romance and realism in this story. less
