review 1: I loved Sidney Sheldon, and own every book he’s ever written. Tilly Bagshawe is no Sidney Sheldon. We’re supposed to believe that the only flaw the heroine has is that she’s too committed to her political career? That she could even rise to such heights under a false identity? That everyone in her life suffers some type of mental illness, psychotic break or moral shortcoming, except her? As I read this book, I could see bits of Sidney Sheldon’s other books here and there. However, the brilliance of Sidney Sheldon work was how diverse one book was from the next. And while he wrote strong female characters, he didn’t do so at the expense of the male characters. It’s further disappointing when you can discern the author’s political affiliation through needless... more details, such as the clichéd loud and obnoxious Texan tourist relying on the “real news” provided by Fox. However, I especially take exception to her line (referring to Bill Clinton), “Bill’s worst crime was having some fat chick give him head in the oval office…” I don’t think anybody cared how much Monica Lewinsky weighed so much as the fact that she was practically his daughter’s age. I read this book more as a favor to friend, and boy; does Krystal owe me big time!
review 2: A contemporary. It seems quite dull at first, but when approaching the climax, you just can't put down the book. It all started from a careless mistake when Toni failed to take care of a young kid while they're playing at the beach. After a few hours, the boy was found dead due to drowning. Her lover, Billy wanted to protect and took the blame for her, kept in the jail for 15 years. During his life in jail, he had thought one day, he would marry Toni, that she will understand that what he did was to protect her. Unfortunately, Toni ran away from home, seeking for a new life in England. She changed her name to Alexia. With hard work and some back-up from his new-found husband, Alexia became the British Home Secretary. As politics stuff can be quite tough, Alexia got much hates from the public. She thinks that her past has been well-buried away, and she could start a new life here. Instead, people are still seeking her for vengeance. I would say this's an adult fiction, therefore getting a bit dull for me somewhere in the middle. It's mixed with some sort of "detective investigation" by Alexia as she went to find out the truth behind Billy's daughter' death. (Dun ask me why she die or how she come into the story! You'll have to read it for yourself) Haha~ less
