review 1: Inspired by the 2008 events in Mumbai, this book walks through a single day in which a terrorist attack forever alters the lives of those involved. As a group of mercenaries detonate bombs in a shopping plaza and train station eventually taking control of a posh London hotel, police and hostages must grapple with their fears both past and present in an effort to survive. A hotel manager, grieved father and police commissioner offer substantial back-stories intertwined with non-stop action to make this book a true page-turner. Good and evil blur as the motives behind the terrorists are revealed one-by-one in a true-to-life mirror of the complexity of religion, power and money in the 21st century. Being a huge fan of Bruce Willis’ Die Hard character John McClane, I was... more unabashedly rooting for wild card protagonist Scope while secretly knowing that the good guy was sure to win in the end. The cover art depicting a Georgian style hotel exhaling thick plumes of black smoke provides a stark contrast between the exclusive luxury of wealth and the brutal indifference of terror that will appeal to teens and adults alike.

As always Simon Kernick is a truly awesome writer. Fast paced and very real. Highly recommended.

Great book. I'd put it up there with the Mitch Rapp books by Vince Flynn.
