review 1: I'm getting a bit cross now, this is the second "bed time reading" book that I've had to give up on for being rubbish. So what's wrong with this? Well, it's a bit Die Hard to start with - Die Hard with knobs on. The book opens with a brutal killing and does a lot of macho posturing and the establishing of the bad guys' hard-man bad-guy credentials. Then there is the cute, blonde (probably very feisty, I didn't get that far) female character who works in the hotel, just engaged to her boyfriend, the mysterious man who manages to take out some of the hard-men with a knife, the cute, petite woman he takes under his wing - and her 7 year old son, who looks up at everyone with his big dark eyes - who is, why didn't I guess this from the beginning? DIABETIC...The bad guys were car... moreicatures, the chief of police is a no-nonsense woman... I just decided to stop before the cliché o'vision gave me sleepless nights.Nul points.
review 2: This was pretty good, I think most of Simon Kernick's books are. This was scarliy plausible. There is always a wide mix of guests on any given day at a fancy London hotel..On what seems like a normal afternoon at The Stanthorpe, Duty Manager Elena starts her shift after getting engaged and goes about her day dealing with staff and guests.Without warning terrorists invade the hotel and Elena and the guests are hostages in an unwinnable situation less
