review 1: I actually had my husband read this book first because the only Simon R. Green books I've read are the Secret Histories novels and I was unsure if the short stories in this book would tie into any of his other novels. The good news is that this book can be read completely as a stand alone collection of stories. While the first story does connect to the Secret Histories novels it is not necessary to have read them to understand the story. Many of these stories are actually older works that were published early in Green's career. This does show in that the stories seem underdeveloped compared to his current writings. Some of the characters and settings are intriguing but the stories contained in this book are simply not long enough to capitalize on this poten... moretial.
review 2: I've been a fan of Simon Green's books for over 20 years now. Starting with his Hawk and Fisher books. His novels and series have been completely dependable entertaining light fiction with great dialogue, fast action and a deft hand with social statements, morality and philosophy that never read as being preachy. A good mix of snark and story. After all those years of reading his books and loving them? Reading this convinced me that the man is a master of short stories. His economy with words and the philosophical bend to his short stories is reminiscent of some of the great scifi and fantasy short stories of our times. The definitive ones that stick with you and sometimes get a 20 page story turned into a 2 hour movie. They were deeper and richer then some of his novels because they were brief and to the point.I don't like spoilers, or the idea of book reports instead of reviews. This isn't the best introduction to Simon Green's work because a lot of it is very different from what he writes as a novelist. Even his short Secret Histories story (which is a must for anyone who reads Secret Histories) has a very different tone then the series does. I think that some people who love his books will hate this collection, and other people who aren't fond of his books will find that he's better writer than they expected. Thank you Netgalley and Open Road Media for providing a copy of free of charge in exchange for an honest review. less

This isn't a book of short stories, it's a nostalgia trip for Green's existing fans.
