review 2: While this isn't the most elegantly written novel I've ever rea
... mored, "One Night in Winter" is a compelling story of love and privilege in Stalin's USSR.Inspired by a real incident Sebag-Montefiore discovered while writing "Stalin In the Court of the Red Tsar," "One Night in Winter" deals with a tragic event among the children of Stalin's inner circle. In a system where there are no accidents and no coincidences, this tragedy leads to arrests and interrogations. People try to stay loyal. Others try to stay alive by betraying others. While this might not be as good as "Children of the Arbat," I did find that the story held my interest. I got caught up in the betrayals (emotional as well as political) of the characters and felt that Sebag Montefiore reached the heart of the era he was writing about. less

A good read, thoroughly enjoyed it; the ending was quite well judged (she says grudgingly).

One of the best pieces of fiction on life in the USSR. On the same shelf as Gorky park.
