review 1: A very hard story, but even so I didn't want to put it down. I've read lots of books set during Stalinist Russia; this is the first which describes how children as well as adults were sent to Lubyanka prison, tortured and brain washed into informing on teachers, family members, and each other... The grimness is relieved by two bitter sweet love stories. Read it if you like Stuart Kaminsky's Profiry Rostnikov series or Sam Eastland's Pekkala books, also set in the time of Stalin.
review 2: 4.5 stars. Rather uneven, and takes a good while to get going, but a brilliant evocation of life in Soviet Russia just after the end of the Second World War. It's both a love story and a horrifying depiction of a society where even children can disappear into the dreaded ... moreLubyanka prison, where people can be denounced and sent off to a gulag, where even Stalin's closest allies are not immune from his ferocious whims. I finished reading it last night and the story and characters have been on my mind all day. less
