review 1: You can see SSM put a lot of effort into making sure the reader was immersed in an accurate portrayal of the various time periods. However the concentration to detail is at the expense of the story with the result the characters come across as caricatures. For those interested in the subject there are a lot of good memoirs available. And there are many better fictionalized accounts out there. This novel is, in a word, disappointing.
review 2: I loved the historical aspect of this book and the story kept me interested. I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in the revolution. ... mored to see what would happen next but nearer the end I read just to finish. I didn't like the jump to the historian searching for the family. Her work felt like it came too easily and it was too contrived. It was not one of those books that's grabs me so tightly I don't want to see it end but I did enjoy it and it was a learning experience. less

Amazing, reminiscent of Dr. Zhivago and at times just as heartbreaking.
