review 1: This is probably the most hateful, self-centered, obsessively narcissistic, stereotypical, shallow and pretentious work of litterature I've ever read. A sort of story carefully constructed to perpetuate and elaborate on the chokingly clichéed narrative complex about men as violent, blind, insensitive assholes and women as the perpetually victimized, fragile, beautiful flowers lined up under their crushing feet. The premise seems to be that the world has not evolved at all beyond the social constrictions of Jane Austen's contemporary social life. Siri Hustvedt lines up men for derision, ridicule and hatred, while at he same time delving into the seemingly limitless beauty and depth of the female psyche. It doesn't help much that she seasons this hate salad with lists of au... morethors and philosophers, quotes and references to other so-called intellectuals, in a way that does not add anything to the story except a display of her own exquisite education and a blatant proposal to the upper middle class - the obvious, and exclusive, target for this work.
review 2: I hesitated to read this book because of the title. The topic of what happens to a woman whose husband leaves her for another after 30 years of marriage actually didn't interest me much, but, once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. The writing is excellent and the interaction between the women priceless. I found Siri Hustvedt's portrayal of human nature, particular women, remarkably insightful. And, for me, it was a big plus that so much of what she wrote was thought provoking. less
