review 1: This book is mostly interesting because it told the story of a courtier during the Queen Elizabeth I reign. The part about the ceruse paint that all the court women wear to please the queen was shocking and deathly! Lead poisoning was the cause why they don't have many children and causes premature death. However, the other descriptions that capture my attention was the details such as the castle in Windsor and the courtiers attire during that time. They were absurd and highly extravagant but nobody could challenge the queen. They must do everything just to please the queen, most absurd. As conclusion, nice way of storytelling, and nice sonnets.
review 2: I found the first 3/4 of this book challenging because I didn't like the hero... at all. So while our heroin
... moree was dashing around trying to make him happy, I was cheering for their marriage to fail so she could get away from him. (It should be noted that I think we're supposed to like him, at least by the end of the first quarter.) I did enjoy reading about life in the Elizabethan court and found much of that pretty fascinating. I certainly learned that I'd whither and die before I'd survive as a courtier. Despite not liking the hero or being able to get on board with the primary storyline, I was still at a solid 3 stars before I got to the last quarter.I feel like the author really rushed the last quarter of the book. Characters contradicted themselves, acted in ways that were out of character, and wholly unrealistic conversations took place. It was a disappointment to see it end that way since I had been enjoying it up to that point. less
