review 1: This was an interesting book. The beginning of it was a bit too long winded for my liking but I stayed with it because I was interested in the mystery the story was built around. This book shows that even though we think of the period this book was placed in, as a "simpler" time, it was anything but. There was just as much hatred towards those from other lands as there is today and the way the religions work to try and cancel each other out was shown quite well. At least the story showed the true nature of how some of the church, no matter the religion, were just as, if not more corrupt than average killers. There were a few characters I grew to like in the story though- Bruno, Harry and Rogers and when they were together, they created a few comical scenes. This is an... moreother quality I wish to give the author credit for. Even though, at least to me, the story had far more description than was necessary to create a vividly realistic story, the author did write in a way that brought the 16th Century to life. You could see the scenes unfolding in your mind's eye, even smell the smells that were described and that isn't the easiest thing to do. Later on in the story, as the betrayal was unveiled I was pretty ticked off at the character who was at fault and I think this is what the author was wanting to convey; to get you to like a character, feel sorry for them enough, only to later unveil they were anything but innocent and played a major role in the mystery.
review 2: Well, the historical murder mystery is quite the new vogue- we are flooded with the things. This is one of the better ones, but in all honesty how much mileage can the authors get from endlessly describing the stench of mediaeval or Tudor life, the fleas, the cess pits, the plague or the silk clothing of the wealthy? Plot - improbable, writing OK, but as the author is female, this is one new age Tudor sleuth. Fun though. less
