review 1: this is an easy enough read, but I've been spoilt by C J Sansoms Tudor books. this pales in comparison. the story did not seem to emanate any atmosphere. the "hero" of the piece, Guiardano Bruno, is based on a real character from the time. Why did the author not have a fictional character? as it is Bruno is not the most astute investigator, shardlake he definately is not. he walks around Oxford stopping to chat to almost everyone he meets hoping to pick up clues. it almost reads like a video game. however, he only realises what is happening when he is caught and the villain, who the reader surely realises as soon as he is introduced, and he conveniently relates the plot to him. I got quite bored with it all but stuck with it to the end. At this time I don't think I will re... moread another S J Parr is, unless I'm marooned in a bleak scenario, with no kindle, library or any other book to choose from. Disappointed.
review 2: It took me a while to get into this book. I did not feel that it was as evocative of the age as the C.J.Sansom books. However, as I got into it I enjoyed it. The discussions are very interesting and engrossing and it certainly made me think about religious fanaticism and the issues which we face currently. I enjoyed the descriptions of the buildings. The plot is full of twists and turns, red herrings and misunderstandings. We experience these through the narrator's viewpoint. The excitement builds up throughout the tale and I look forward to reading the next one. less
