review 1: Thank all that's holy that this book exists. Oh, yes: mysteries and furrowed brows, moments of fervid imagination, sordid histories and shocking realizations... this book has it all, and then some, if clipped and ghostly in its brief passage. Which is to say: there's a lot of competing genres packed into a short span of pages, and the emotional heft of the book outweighs its word count. Sjón's most accessible work, perhaps; at least a thrilling teaser for his other, longer novels.
review 2: I was drawn to "The Blue Fox" because it takes place in 19th century Iceland in the snowy dead of winter. Since it has been 100-plus degrees all week in St. Louis, I thought this book would be the perfect escape. While there were some lovely turns of phrase here, and this
... more novella provided a fascinating glimpse into a folk cuture unfamiliar to me, this story just didn't resonate with me or move me as I had hoped it would. less
