review 1: It's always difficult to "judge" a work of translation because you have no idea what you are missing. I think it's interesting that FRIDA'S BED was translated into English from Croation. Anyway, putting that aside, I feel like Drakulic captured Frida's essence. Her collage-style composition of drifting from third-person to first-person to art critic was neither confusing or distracting but appropriate and effective. You can tell she's done her research on Frida, but that she's also projected her own emotional truths of what it might have been like to be Frida. As a Frida fan I was mesmerized and captivated. As someone who suffers from pain I recognized the true vein of this narrative and appreciated it. It is never an easy task to write a fictional account of a historical ... morefigure nor is it easy to convey pain of any kind but Drakulic and her translator have accomplished both.
review 2: The author takes us on a chronological tour of Frida kahlo's incredible life with all of its tragedies and triumphs. The translation is straight-forward and rather flat as reading material. But, the format does highlight how Frida's changing emotions are reflected in her work. Unfortunately, there are far too few photographs, and the reader must try to envision many, if not most, of the pieces mentioned via the author's written description. I found myself going on-line repeatedly in order to fully experience each piece as it was discussed. I have to say, "Frida's Bed" did inspire me enough to do that. less
