review 1: I love this series but this book was disappointing. A lot of filling-in about what happened in the Protectorate when Rudi & pals were on their quest east. A lot of jumping around in time, and new characters of uncertain significance. I guess if you love Tiphaine d'Ath you might like this. I get the feeling Stirling is getting all the chess pieces in place for the next 2 books. Or at least, I hope.
review 2: While I'm a big fan of this series I have to say I would have been fine with it concluding after the Protectors War. This book was by far my least favorite of the series so far and gave very little to the overall series. I also feel like about an eighth or more of the book could have been trimmed out by not going into multiple page length descriptions
... moreof what every charachter seemed to be wearing in every scene. I found myself just skipping through paragraphs that I could tell were nothing more than descriptions of what a charachter was wearing, why they wore it, why it was different than what they wore in other regions, etc. As a fan of the series I'll keep reading but I have to say it's a series that I'm ready for it to end more so because I'm getting bored with it than excited to see what happens at this point. less

Not nearly enough action in this one.
