review 1: Wow. Just....wow. I was floating along happily through this book...the animals are talking, so I'm thinking "Okay, magical realism....we'll see where it goes..." Then I got to the last couple pages, and WOW. It all came together. I don't want to give anything away. To describe it would totally ruin the book. Interesting idea, fabulous execution. Ms. Hartnett's books always leave me with MUCH to ponder.
review 2: In "The Midnight Zoo" brothers Tomas and Andrej find themselves orphaned, left alone to survive in a war-torn land, responsible themselves for the infant sister they have wrapped up in a backpack. This is an endearing tale of what it means to have freedom and how to survive in a world destroyed by your own human race. In this fantasy story, Toma... mores and Andrej encounter a zoo, abandoned in the middle of a destroyed town. The animals have all survived and are hungry, lonely, angry & waiting for their favorite person; the zookeepers daughter to come back to them as she had promised. When we meet the animals in the zoo fairly early in the book, the rest of the story slows down and we begin to read flashbacks and get more information on the family that they can no longer be with. I was a little disappointed in the end to not find out what happened NEXT, which is why I'd be interested in reading a sequel! less
