review 1: I liked the book The Midnight Zoo because it was quite interesting how Sonya Hartnett could give the readers a new perspective on war. Though this takes place during World War 2, this perspective could be implied to other wars too. Usually, people write about people's perspective on war, but she tells the animals' perspective of war like for example, she tells about what challenges they had to face through because of war (World War 2). It shows war from a different angle. She tells that war does not only affect humans, but other things too like animals. One of the challenges the animals had to face because of war is not being able to take care of themselves. The author shows this by the seal swimming in dirty water. It said ,"Set in to the floor of the next enclosure was a ... moreswimming pool. The water had a moldery smell, and even in night's dimness looked green." (pg. 31- 32) The seal had to swim in not clean water because there was nobody to put in fresh water in the swimming pool that the seal was swimming. When the wolf says " None of us know why your war is happening. Your squabbles aren't something we care about. When a wolf clan battles another, it's usually over territory. Probably this is the..." (pg. 55- 56) The author uses the wolf to show that humans are not so different from animals by showing that both usually battle over territory. This is how she gave a new perspective on war which is why I liked the story.
review 2: Well, first of all, one of the things I liked about this book was its ability to be both historical fiction and fantasy at the same time. I've been racking my brain to think of other books like that. I'm afraid one reason that I did not like this book was because of my lack of knowledge and background of these people, the Romani gypsies. I would like to know if any Romani gypsies who've read this book feel like certain aspects of their culture were represented in this book, particularly in Hartnett's unique writing style, as I had the feeling that that was what she was striving for. Being a cultural outsider, is her depiction of these people culturally authentic in their minds? less
