The Debutante Files
review 1: This is the start of a new series for Sophie and the first book is a winner. This is a quintessential historical romance. The characters are strong, memorable, with a great plot that keeps you entralled until the end. It has romance, laughter and a lovely love story, and a wicked step mother. The tortured hero, Declan, disowned by his father becomes a bad boy who doesn't follow the fules. Roasalie, the neglected young lady who has no where else to go and winds up on Declan's doorstep. And so it begins. This novel was well paced with lots of surprises and suspense to satisfy any reader. I like Sophie Jordan and cannot wait for the next book, hopefully about Max and Aurelia.
review 2: Meh... This is probably a 2 star more than a 3, but I tend to reserve belo
... morew-three star ratings for books I had trouble getting through, and that's not a problem I had here. I like Jordan's writing style and the pace of the story was quick, but maybe a bit too quick. I like the premise of the book, two people who want to be together, but need to overcome a societal norm, yada yada, but the characterization was incredibly weak imo. While I don't dislike either Declan or Rosalie, I don't feel I was given any reason to like them either. Both of them fall flat, and the only times I was interested in their relationship was when Rosalie remembers their shared childhood and when they are having sex. Not that the sex scenes are emotional satisfying, but they are well written. The secondary characters, especially Aurelie and Rosalie's mother, are the only people that seem to have any personality but that's only because they can remain caricatures. The conflicts between Rosalie and her mother and Declan and Rosalie's mother drive the plot. Declan's conflict does not truly belong in this story. It has been addressed countless times and handled much better by other authors that, for me, it sticks out like a sore thumb. While it wasn't a painful reading experience, it wasn't a particularly fulfilling one either. Knowing what I do now, I would have spent my time elsewhere. less

I had not realized this was a tawdry romance novel until partway in... not bad for its genre.

DNF Just not gripping and not into step-siblings.
