review 1: Maybe a 4 star. I'm torn. The worldbuilding was wonderful and I liked the very different take on the fae. I also liked the backstory - it's too easy to make the narrator a victim and then show how much she's recovered to create sympathy. The lack of growth/development/change of the narrator bothered me, though. Comparing this to the first Kate Daniels book is, perhaps, unfair, but there's a certain parallel, and in comparison, this book ended with the narrator very much in the same place as when she started. The only thing that really changed was that the central mystery was solved, and the ghost of her past is haunting her corporally rather than just mentally. I'll put it on my 'read again' shelf to see if I like it better on a re-read.
review 2: I wasn'
... moret really expecting much going into this, So I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out that this was a pretty cool book. Now I could say 'Good' or 'fun' or some other adjective to describe the book, But cool is the only word that seems to cover it.Annabelle is cool. And fun. And quirky and depressing and well, cool. I love her. She's down to earth and a borderline alcoholic and if I may say so, A little crazy. The love interests in the book are pretty uneventful and uninteresting, Although I wish Annabelle would fess up to Hitch about the probablity that their break up was based on a lie. But really, He kinda doesn't deserve her.Cane is sweet but boring. The settle down and have 20 kids kind of guy, And he should know that she just isn't like that. But I digress..The book is definitly worth a read, I had fun and was roped in pretty quickly.I think it's the book cover that kept me from expecting anything good from the book, Since it seems to detract from the interesting and fun story that hides behind this somewhat depressing and boring cover. less

Started out slow but got better towards the end. I wouldn't mind reading the second book.
