review 1: I really enjoy authors who journey back into the past and bring to attention subjects either ignored or all together forgotten on the shelves on history. "Accidents of Providence" takes place in post-civil war England in the time of Cromwell. King Charles I has lost his head and a stricter religious core rules over the country. However, the main focus of the story is surrounding a woman accused of killing her newborn and then trying to cover up the evidence. The author cites both the 1624 law that existed and uses many actual historical personalities in her book. An interesting read which I did have to put down every now and again due to its dark subject matter.
review 2: England in the 1600's is not my favorite time period-however, in 1624 a law was written c
... morealled, "An Act to Prevent the Destroying and Murdering of Bastard Children" . Interesting to learn about this law- how it came into being and how it was carried out. This was a time of great repression . People were afraid either because of their religious beliefs, their politics, or a combination of both ! Loosely based on some factual accounts. A great example of the attempt to legislate morality ! less
