review 1: Something was missing in the telling of this story. The characters were very flat and made very stupid choices given the day and age. The combination made it difficult to care about anyone. If I don't care about the characters why read the book? If one is going to write about Newgate which we've all heard about with its grim surroundings and hopelessness and depravity then one must bring their characters to life. To those that have read this novel, as perhaps you did also, I figured out what happened during the birth way before we found out at the very end of the book so all in all, no surprises. I only finished this because I am reluctant to toss aside a book.
review 2: This was a very interesting and thought-provoking book that focuses on a law passed by th... moree English Parliament in Cromwell's new government which states that if an illegitimate child dies at birth or after and is secretly buried and there is no witness to prove it was stillborn or died of natural causes, the mother can be tried and executed as a murderess. It traces a love affair between a married rebel hero and anunmarried woman who ultimately bears a child and is arrested and sent to trial when the child is found dead. The story is told through the eyes of several characters' not the least the investigator who gathers the evidence that may convict her yet has lingering doubts that torment him.Based on an actual case, it holds you in suspense while putting the law itself on trial.
