review 1: "Oh, dieses Geheimnis, das ich immer und überall spüre, wenn ich unter Erwachsenen bin, vor dem sie die Türe zuschließen in der Nacht, das sie in leises Gespräch versenken, trete ich unversehens herein, dieses große Geheimnis, das mir jetzt seit Tagen nahe ist, hart vor den Händen, und das ich noch immer nicht greifen kann!""Er verstand, daß sie ihm das Geheimnis zu hüten gab, daß auf seinen kleinen Kinderlippen ein Schicksal lag."So geniales Buch! Ich musste es regelrecht verschlingen. Wie genial die Erzählperspektive zu Beginn von dem Mann zu dem Sohn der begehrten Frau wechselt, dann immer hin und her hopst, bis sie beim Sohn landet, der in dieser Novelle einen rasanten Entwicklungsprozess durchmacht und doch nicht hinter das brennende Geheimnis der Erwachsen... moreen kommt. Wie man so eine Geschichte mit derart viel Niveau erzählen kann und so dermassen gekonnt das Essentielle auslässt, um diese überaus wichtige Leerstelle, das, worum es in diesem Buch geht, voll und ganz der Phantasie des Lesers zu überlassen... ein Geniestreich. Supertoll erzählt und geschrieben. Ich werde doch noch zum Stefan Zweig Fan!
review 2: This is an unusual story told in an unusual way. Well.. It's unusual for me,at least.. There is lust,there is innocence,there is trust and breach of trust,there is maternal love and there is also the craving of human body to possess and be possessed. These themes are there in the story,in the background,but what I felt resounding throughout was the death of innocence. As pages turned,I was trying to find out if that death was suicide or murder or assisted suicide. When the story began there was a child and his mother. In the end,there is a mother and a young man. When Edgar talked about the ways in which he had tried to find out the secret of the adults,I was reminded of Freud. I was thinking of him talking about children's curiosity to learn about what's going on behind their back,their attempts to gain that knowledge. This is a story with strong emotions,even though none of the characters seem capable of it individually. I still don't know if I liked the story or not,but it shook me to the core. I guess that's what matters the most,how it touches us.. less
